Below you will see some of the many wellness books and apps that I consider my top favourites. There are categories for adults, parenting, and children/teens. I have personally read and/or listened to all of these and am excited to share them with you.
Author and psychotherapist Amy Morin shares with her readers that it is often the habits we cannot break that are holding us back from true success and happiness. Using Morin's specific tips, exercises, and troubleshooting advice, she helps readers to realize that it is possible to not only fortify your mental muscle but also drastically improve your quality of life.
This book provides readers with a simple, profoundly effective way to instantly update how we process daily life to meet the high-stress demands of our times. This book is based on Emotional Brain Training (EBT) by asking ourselves the simple question "what's my number" to help identify our emotions and deal with anxiety, stress, food cravings, depression and other struggles one may be experiencing.
Mindfulness is a tool that can be used to help break the cycle of anxiety, stress, unhappiness, and exhaustion. This book is based on the theoretical approach Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy (MBCT). By incorporating a daily mindfulness practice you can experience the benefits it has for many mental health struggles. MBCT has been scientifically proven to be just as effective as medication for depression. Regardless if you have depression or not, this book is absolutely amazing and supports those who are struggling to keep up with the constant demands of the modern world.
A free meditation app that has guided meditations and talks led by some of the world's top meditation and mindfulness experts, neuroscientists, psychologists and teachers from Stanford, Harvard, the University of Oxford and others.
Thought Diary is an effective journalling app that uses different theoretical approaches such as Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT). This app will help you to evaluate, understand and change your thoughts and feelings.
Headspace is an app that supports individuals through tough times and helps to build resiliency skills. There are guided meditations on different subjects such as focus, exercise and sleep. Each day there are meditations on new topics. There are even guided meditations and mindfulness exercises for kids with sessions on kindness, calm, and focus.
With the rise of child/teen anxiety, it is important that parents and professionals use the right tools to support kids so that they don't unknowingly reinforce a child's worries and avoidance. This book shares the most common anxiety-enhancing patterns while offering a concrete plan with 7 key principles that foster change.
No Drama Discipline offers a compassionate and effective road map for dealing with tantrums, tears, and tensions without causing a scene. It highlights the link between a child's neurological development and a parent's reaction to misbehaviour.
Did you know that between ages twelve and twenty-four the brain changes in important and at times challenging ways? During this book, Dan Siegel explores exciting ways in which understanding how the brain functions can improve the lives of adolescents by making their relationships more fulfilling.
One of the best predictors for how a child turns out is whether at least one adult in their life has consistently shown up for them. The author's explain that every child needs the Four S's: safe, seen, soothed, and secure which are the four building blocks of a child's healthy development. Anything written by Dan Siegel is going to be AMAZING!
This book is written by a psychologist who is an expert in childhood anxiety. It offers an easy to use guide with proven effective Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) and exposure skills that you can use at home, social settings, or anywhere anxiety takes hold.
This is one of my top favourite books for kids ages 5-12! This book helps children understand the fight, flight, and freeze response and different parts of the brain by relating the terms to four animals. We all have animals in our brains, even adults! A great book to teach about the brain and emotional regulation.
Such a cute book to teach kids ages 4-8 about different breathing exercises. This is a beautifully illustrated book of mindfulness exercises to help kids manage their bodies, breath, and emotions. Kids love completing these fun, simple 30 short breathing practices and movements.
This is such a fun book to help teach kids about mindfulness. In the book a young boy discovers his mind is like a puppy, always wandering away, into the past or the future. Through remembering to breathe, the boy learns how to become a stronger and more caring master of his puppy mind, keeping it in the present, if only for a minute.
I recommend this book constantly for kids ages 12 and up who are experiencing anxiety. The book is written from the perspective of a 14 year old teen which helps the reader to connect. Casey knows just what it's like to be miserable and full of worry. She goes through how her life is effected by anxiety and offers a realistic guide for stepping into the new and scary experiments that arrive at each developmental stage, right up through the teen years.
A book written to kids from kids! Full of "I have been through it too" advice about other kid's struggles and triumphs through their parent's divorce. This book is filled with insight and humour to help support kids whose parents are going through a divorce.
Although this specific workbook is on Self-esteem for teens, there are many different topics written in this same workbook format . Other topics include anxiety, eating disorders, depression, grit, social skills, self-compassion and many more. These are great resources for teens!
